Lebohang Maboe scored a superb winner one minute from the end of extra-time as SuperSport United edged second-tier Cape Town Spurs in a tense Nedbank Cup Last 16 clash at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.
SuperSport become the first team into the quarter-finals, reaching the stage for the second year in a row, but were made to work hard by Spurs, who very nearly took the game to penalties.
Spurs forward Therlo Moosa opened the scoring inside five minutes with a superb solo goal. He was set free on the right wing and burst away from his defender before cutting into the box and unleashing a left-footed shot that arrowed in the net.
It is a second goal of the campaign for Moosa after he also netted in the 3-1 victory at Venda FC in the previous round.
That was a superb start for Spurs, but they could not hold on to their advantage until halftime.
When they failed to clear a corner, SuperSport’s 20-year-old defender Ime Okon netted only his second career goal as he blasted the ball into the back of the net from eight yards.
SuperSport hit the post and both teams had other chances, but the game was decided by a blistering shot from the edge of the box by Maboe, his first in SuperSport colours since a loan move from Mamelodi Sundowns.
