Sundowns survive scare to beat Sibanye Golden Stars
PIC: Mamelodi Sundowns’ Tashreeq Matthews celebrates his brace of goals
Four-time winners Mamelodi Sundowns were handed a scare but advanced to the Last 32 of the Nedbank Cup with a 5-2 victory over third-tier Sibanye Golden Stars on Saturday.
Ten-man Sundowns cruised into a 3-0 lead thanks to a brace of goals from Tashreeq Matthews and another from Malibongwe Khoza, but the Free State ABC Motsepe League side brought it back to 3-2 as Mojalefa Mokhatla and Boeletsang Rankali were on the scoresheet.
Arthur Sales made it 4-2 before Sundowns midfielder Bathusi Aubaas received a red card. But winger Kobamelo Kodisang scored deep into injury-time to secure the victory.
It means Sundowns extend to 21 their winning streak against lower league teams in the Nedbank Cup.
Chippa United won 2-1 at Lamontville Golden Arrows to secure their passage to the next stage, a game in which Abafana Bes’thende’s Brandon Theron scored at both ends within three minutes.
Sinoxolo Kwayiba put Chippa ahead with 20 minutes to go, before Theron equalised. But his joy turned to sorrow as a few minutes later he put the ball into his won net.
Baroka FC were emphatic 3-0 winners over third-tier Umvoti FC as Tshepho Mashiloane, Clyde Combi and Bonginkosi Makume all found the back of the net.
Cape Town Spurs won 3-1 away at fellow second-tier side Venda FC with CJ Bezuidenhout, Therlo Moosa and Jarrod Moroole on the scoresheet. Rotonswa Mutsivhuli netted a consolation for the home side.
Finally, Durban City won 2-0 at third-tier Lerumo Lions thanks to goals from Siphamandla Nzuza and Lindokuhle Chonco.
