Stellies, Galaxy safely through to Last 16
PIC: Tshiamo Mahome of Pretoria Callies is tackled by Deano van Rooyen of Stellenbosch FC
Last year’s semifinalists Stellenbosch FC and 2019 winners TS Galaxy booked their places in the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup on Friday night, though the Winelands club were given a mighty scare by second-tier Pretoria Callies
Stellenbosch edged past Callies 4-3 on penalties after the teams played to a 1-1 draw at the Danie Craven Stadium. The home side took the lead via Devin Titus and looked well on course for victory, but a fine equaliser from Leandro de Sousa for Callies three minutes from the end took the game to extra-time.
That led to a shootout and it weas the home side who kept their nerve.
But Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker will look back on this as a game that should have been over long before the 90 minutes was up.
His side impressed as they cut Callies apart on several occasions, but the finishing touch was just not there. To be fair, visiting goalkeeper Tshepo Mohui also had a very good game.
TS Galaxy continued their recent dominance of Golden Arrows with a 2-1 victory to see them into the Last 16. It follows their 3-1 home league win over Abafana Bes’thende this past weekend.
And they scored all three goals in the game too. Lehlohonolo Mojela put them ahead in Durban, before Solomon Letsoenyo put the ball into his own net.
But Galaxy were the better side again and Mpho Mvelase scored a winner midway through the second half.
