Stellenbosch cruise into Nedbank Cup quarter-finals

Stellenbosch FC cruised into the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup for the third season in a row following a 2-0 home win over Polokwane City at the Danie Craven Stadium on Thursday night.
An own goal from Bulelani Nikani and a second strike of the 2025 Nedbank Cup campaign from Devin Titus eased the home side into the next round.
They had numerous chances to add to the scoreline, and a goal from Fawaaz Basadien wrongfully ruled out for offside, but did enough to secure their passage having reached the semi-finals for the last two seasons.
City found the going tough as they battled to create chances on a ground where they lost 5-0 in the league last season.
Stellenbosch made a fast start and were ahead inside 12 minutes as the unfortunate Nikani turned the ball into his own net.
Amazingly, he also scored an own goal after 12 minutes against Chippa United in the 2023 Nedbank Cup, a tie which City ended up losing on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
The home side kept knocking on the door and it was no surprise when they made it 2-0 as Titus curled in a superb first time shot from the edge of the box and went in off the post.
With Bafana coach Hugo Broos in the stands, it was a nice moment for the winger, who has now taken his tally of Nedbank Cup goals to six in 10 appearances (9 starts), two behind Stellenbosch’s all-time leading scorer in the competition Iqraam Rayners (8).
There were no further goals as Stellenbosch comfortably saw out the game and might have added to their score but for Basadien’s effort being ruled out and some excellent saves from City goalkeeper Manuel Sapunga.
