Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs clash in 2025 Nedbank Cup final
PIC: Ashley du Preez scores the winner for Kaizer Chiefs
Defending champions Orlando Pirates will face Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a mouthwatering final of the 2025 Nedbank Cup at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on May 10 after both won through deciding match in this year’s competition on Sunday.
Pirates defeated Marumo Gallants 1-0 at the Orlando Stadium to reach a third successive Nedbank Cup decider as they seek to lift the trophy for an unprecedented third time in a row.
Chiefs edged Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at a sold out Loftus Stadium to reach their first final since 2019 and stay on course for a first piece of silverware for the club since 2015, potentially ending an unwanted club record 10-year trophy drought.
Orlando Pirates edged Gallants thanks to Kabelo Dlamini’s goal mid-way through the first half.
It was the decisive moment in the game as he collected Patrick Maswanganyi’s pass inside the box and delivered a pinpoint shot into the bottom corner of the net.
The goal sealed a third successive Nedbank Cup final for Pirates, the first to achieve the feat in the current guise of the competition, and the first team to reach three finals in a row in the competition since Chiefs between 1975-77.
Pirates remain the only side to win three Nedbank Cup competition finals in a row when they lifted the trophy three years in succession from 1973-75.
Chiefs came from behind to defeat Sundowns 2-1 after Teboho Mokoena scored a superb free-kick on the stroke of halftime to give the home side the lead.
But the AmaKhosi put in a superb second-half performance to claim victory as 20-year-old Wandile Duba scored his sixth goal of the campaign to level the match.
The game looked to be heading for extra-time, before Ashley du Preez popped up with the winner two minutes from the end.
