Soweto duo kept apart in Nedbank Cup semifinal draw

PIC: Marumo Gallants edged Durban City in a penalty shoot-out in their quarterfinal

Defending champions Orlando Pirates will face Marumo Gallants in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup, while Kaizer Chiefs must wait for the completion of the quarterfinal between Mamelodi Sundowns and Sekhukhune United to know their opponents.
Pirates have been drawn at home to Gallants, who they beat 8-1 earlier this campaign in the league, but also suffered a 2-0 loss to earlier this month.
Chiefs will go to one of Sundowns or Sekhukhune as they seek to lift the Nedbank Cup for the first time since 2013, and end their 10-year trophy drought in all competitions.

It sets up the prospect of a first Soweto Derby final in the Nedbank Cup competition since the 2006 season, though there is a lot of football to be played before that is a reality.

The 2021 winners Gallants booked their place in the semifinals with a hard-fought 4-1 penalty shoot-out win over second-tier Durban City on Sunday

The teams toiled for 120 minutes and despite chances at both ends, the best falling to Gallants, neither side could find a goal.

Saziso Magawana struck the crossbar with his spot-kick in the shoot-out and Athini Jodwana saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Kagiso Mlambo, while Gallants’ greater experience shone through as they scored all of their penalties.
There had been no shootouts in the first two rounds of the 2025 Nedbank Cup, but Sunday’s was the second after Pirates edged SuperSport United on spot-kicks in their quarterfinal.

It is a third Nedbank Cup semifinal for Gallants after their tournament win four years ago, when they beat Chippa United 1-0 in the final, and the following year when they were finalists again but this time lost to Sundowns.
