Sekhukhune United cruise into Nedbank Cup Last 16
PIC: Katlego Otladisa scored the opening goal for Sekhukhune United
Sekhukhune United became the 11th side to confirm their place in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 after they cruised to a 2-0 home win over Cape Town City in their first round tie at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Monday.
Winger Katlego Otladisa and City old boy Relebogile Mokhuoane netted for the home side as they look for a repeat of their place in the 2023 Nedbank Cup final, where they were edged 2-1 by Orlando Pirates.
For City it is the fifth time in six years they have gone out in the Last 32 as they struggle to make an impact in South Africa’s premier knockout competition.
After a cagey first half that created little in the way of clear-cut chances, Sekhukhune took the lead on 57 minutes with a beautiful goal.
Otladisa picked up the ball outside the box and curled a superb shot into the back of the net from 25 yards. It was his first goal for the club since joining on loan from Pirates and just a fifth of his career for the 28-year-old, who made his PSL debut back in 2017.
He last found the back of the net for Marumo Gallants against Moroka Swallows almost three years ago.
The goal stunned City and they fell further behind when old boy Mokhuoane netted a second.
He glanced a header into the back of the net from Sipho Mbule’s corner to also record his first goal for the club and only strike since he netted for City against Cape Town Spurs in December 2023.
Mokhuoane joined Sekhukhune from City at the start of this campaign having played 58 times for the Cape Town club over three seasons.
