Records of the 2025 Nedbank Cup quarterfinal teams

PIC: Kaizer Chiefs defeated Royal AM in the 2023 Nedbank Cup quarterfinals

We have seven of the eight teams confirmed for the 2025 Nedbank Cup quarterfinals and so are able to look back in history and see how they have fared at this stage of the competition.

All but one side has won more than they have lost in the last-8.

DURBAN CITY

PWDLGFGA8
Durban City, formerly known as Maritzburg United, lost 0-2 to eventual champions Moroka Swallows in 2009, and then were beaten by the same scoreline by Mamelodi Sundowns in 2012. The following year they were back in the quarterfinals, but went down 1-2 to another Tshwane side, SuperSport United. They finally did win a last-8 game in 2014 when they beat second-tier African Warriors 3-1, but lost at the semifinal stage. Their only other semifinal was in 2018 when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 on their way to their only Nedbank Cup final, where they lost to Free State Stars.

KAIZER CHIEFS
PWDLGF10 GA5

Chiefs have advanced in five of their eight quarterfinal ties to date, and have not lost a fixture outright at this stage of the competition since 2012. They famously lost 1-2 to third-tier Baroka FC in 2011 in what remains one of the greatest ever Nedbank Cup shocks. The following year they lost 0-1 to Free State Stars to exit at this stage again. They beat Bloemfontein Celtic (1-0) and SuperSport United (2-0) in the next two seasons, but when they were held 1-1 by SuperSport United in 2017, lost on penalties. They have been back to the quarterfinals just three more times since then, gaining revenge over Baroka FC (1-0) in 2018, an beating Cape Town City (2-0) in 2019 and Royal AM (2-1) in 2023.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

P13 WDLGF25 GA12
Sundowns’ only ever draw at the quarterfinal stage of the Nedbank Cup came last year when they were held 1-1 by University of Pretoria but triumphed on penalties, leaving them with a and have a 69% success rate at this stage of the competition. They did go out in the last-8 in 2023 though as they lost 1-2 to Stellenbosch FC, to go with defeats to Platinum Stars (1-2, 2013) and Orlando Pirates (1-2, 2014 & 0-2, 2016). But it has mostly been a tale of victories, including a thumping 3-1 success over Pirates in 2010 and then an even better 4-1 beating of The Buccaneers in 2021.

MARUMO GALLANTS
PWDLGFGA0
Marumo Gallants have yet to lose a quarterfinal or even concede a goal at this stage of the competition, having won both their ties in the past and gone on to make the final. They lifted the trophy in 2021 and beat Black Leopards 2-0 in the quarterfinals along the way. The following year they were runners-up after losing the decider to Mamelodi Sundowns. They beat Baroka FC 1-0 at the quarterfinal stage.

ORLANDO PIRATES

PWDLGF14 GA12

Both Pirates’ quarterfinal losses have come at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns (1-3, 2010 & 1-4, 2021) with no other side able to knock them out at this stage. They have beaten Free State Stars (1-0, 2011), Sundowns (2-1, 2014 & 2-0, 2016), Bloemfontein Celtic (2-1, 2017) and AmaZulu (4-2, 2024), and survived a penalty shoot-out scare against third-tier Dondol Stars when they eventually triumphed on their way to lifting the trophy in 2023. Once they have got past the quarterfinal stage, they have reached the Nedbank Cup final every time.

STELLENBOSCH FC

PWDLGFGA1
Stellenbosch FC’s only previous quarterfinal matches have both resulted in wins. They claimed a famous 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns as they came from behind to snatch the tie thanks to a brace of goals from Iqraam Rayners in 2023. He is now a Brazilian. They returned to the same stage in 2024 and this time thumped another Tshwane side, beating SuperSport United 4-0. They have exited in the semifinals in the last two years.

SUPERSPORT UNITED

PWDLGFGA12

SuperSport have advanced in 63% of their quarterfinal games, only failing on three occasions. They lost 0-2 to Kaizer Chiefs in 2014 and, more disapprovingly, 2-3 to TTM in 2022, the first time they had ever been defeated by lower league opposition. They also slumped to a 40- defeat to Stellenbosch FC in 2024. They played to a 1-1 draw with Chiefs in 2017 but advanced on penalties, and have wins over Jomo Cosmos (1-0, 2012), Maritzburg United (2-1, 2013), Lamontville Golden Arrows (1-0, 2015) and Mpumalanga Black Aces (2-1, 2016).
