Pirates, Chiefs safely through to Nedbank Cup Last 16

PIC:  Patrick Maswanganyi scored twice for Orlando Pirates against Richards Bay

Defending champions Orlando Pirates and their great Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs have both advanced to the Last 16 of the Nedbank after comfortable victories on Sunday.
Pirates defeated fellow top-tier Richards Bay as Patrick Maswanganyi netted a brace and Tshegofatso Mabasa got the other for The Buccaneers.
Yanela Mbuthuma got what proved a consolation goal for the home side, but the visitors were always comfortable winners.
Pirates coach Jose Riveiro takes his winning run of ties in the Nedbank Cup to 11 and is yet to taste defeat after claiming the trophy in both 2023 and 2024. He is looking to become the first coach to win three years in a row.
Chiefs eased past fellow Gauteng side Free Agents FC, beating the third-tier outfit 4-0 for the biggest win so far of the Last 32.
Pule Mmodi set them on their way with an early brace that settled any nerves there may have been among AmaKhosi fans to give them a 2-0 lead at the break.
Angolan defender Inácio Miguel and Ranga Chivaviro added further goals in the second half as Chiefs dominated the contest.
Polokwane City edged third-tier The Bees 1-0 thanks to a strike from Raymond Daniels, but they were made to work hard for the win.
Limpopo ABC Mostepe League side Mpheni Home Defenders ensured there would be at least one third-tier team in the Last 16 draw when they beat second-tier Hungry Lions at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
Rophney Hlungwane put Home Defenders in front, but that lead lasted only two minutes before Kagiso Ndlovu equalised for Lions.
Home Defenders would not be denied though and goals from Halatedzi Matumba and Brandon Mokgope gave them a comfortable win in the end.

It is the first instance this year of a team from a lower division beating an opponent from higher up the South African football and also ensures that a third-tier side, or lower, has made the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup every season bar 2020,
