Nedbank Cup Last 16 – bullet-point previews

PIC: Kaizer Chiefs and Chippa United clashed in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals in 2019.

The 2025 Nedbank Cup Last 16 gets under way on Wednesday when SuperSport United host second-tier Cape Town Spurs.
Here are bullet-point previews of the seven fixtures that have been confirmed to date.

SUPERSPORT UNITED VS CAPE TOWN SPURS
Wednesday, February 12 (19h00 kick-off) – Lucas Moripe Stadium

* Three time winners SuperSport United have only ever exited at the Nedbank Cup Last 16 once in their previous 17 appearances. That was in 2011 when they lost 1-0 away at Free State Stars.
* These sides have met once before in the Nedbank Cup with Cape Town Spurs, then campaigning as Ajax Cape Town, winning a thrilling semi-final 2-1 in 2015.
* Overall, the teams have met on 59 occasions, with 23 wins for SuperSport, 20 for Spurs and 16 draws. SuperSport edge the goals scored 66-61.

STELLENBOSCH FC VS POLOKWANE CITY
Thursday, February 13 (19h00 kick-off) – Danie Craven Stadium
* Stellenbosch FC have reached the semi-finals for the last two seasons in a row but have found Limpopo opposition tough in the competition. They lost 1-0 to Baroka FC in the Last 32 in 2022 and were ousted on penalties by Sekhukhune United at the semi-final stage in 2023.
* Polokwane City have reached the quarter-finals in two of their 12 previous Nedbank Cup appearances. They have Last 16 wins against amateurs Island FC in 2013 (7-2) and Platinum Stars in 2016 (2-1).
* Stellenbosch have won four of the previous six meetings between the sides, with one win for Polokwane and a single draw. The Winelands club have outscored their opponents 11-2.

DURBAN CITY VS TS GALAXY
Friday, February 14 (19h00 kick-off) – Chatsworth Stadium

* Durban City, rebranded this season from Maritzburg United, have exited in the second round in three of the last five seasons. They have had a tough run in the competition with their last four defeats to Orlando Pirates (1-3, 2021), SuperSport United (0-1, 2022), Kaizer Chiefs (0-2, 2023) and Mamelodi Sundowns (0-2, 2024).
* The 2019 winners Galaxy have only lost three of their 15 previous Nedbank Cup games outright and have managed a very healthy total of 29 goals in that time, a touch short of two per game. They were ousted by second-tier TS Sporting in 2021 after losing on penalties following a 0-0 draw.
* City edge the head-to-head with three wins to two for Galaxy. There has been a single draw between the sides and they have each scored seven goals.

ORLANDO PIRATES VS BAROKA FC
Saturday, February 15 (15h00 kick-off) – Orlando Stadium

* Back-to-back winners Orlando Pirates are unbeaten in their last 13 Nedbank Cup fixtures (W11 D2). Their last outright defeat was a 4-1 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-finals in 2021, almost four years ago.
* Baroka have only lost a single Last 16 tie in nine Nedbank Cup appearances. That was in 2017 when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Platinum Stars.
* Baroka have never beaten Pirates outright in 13 previous meetings, though a whopping 10 of those games have been drawn. The Limpopo club did edge a penalty shoot-out in the final of the 2018 Telkom Knockout when the decider ended 2-2. Five of the six previous clashes at Pirates have been drawn, all bar a 3-1 win for The Buccaneers in 2017/18.

MARUMO GALLANTS VS AMAZULU

Saturday, February 15 (15h00 kick-off) – Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium

* Gallants have exited in the Last 16 in two of their previous four Nedbank Cup appearances … but the other two seasons they made the final, winning in 2021 and losing the following year.
* Last year was the first time AmaZulu made it past the Last 16 in 11 seasons, since they made the semi-finals in 2012. They had lost four Last 16 games in a row prior to beating Sekhukhune United 2-0.
* These two sides clashed as recently as Friday, when AmaZulu won 2-0 in Durban. Overall they have met eight times before, with Usuthu winning three of those to go with a single success for Gallants and four draws. AmaZulu lead the scoring 7-3.

KAIZER CHIEFS VS CHIPPA UNITED

Saturday, February 15 (18h00 kick-off) – FNB Stadium

* Kaizer Chiefs have reached the Last 16 for only the second time in five seasons and have a mixed record at this stage of the competition. They lost three Last 16 games in a row between 2008 and 2010, and suffered further defeats in 2015 and 2020. But they have also advanced on eight occasions.
* Chippa have reached the Last 16 seven times since 2017 and won five of those ties, losing only to Free State Stars (1-2, 2018) and BidVest Wits (0-2, 2020). They have reached the semi-finals at least on four occasions in that time.
* Chiefs and Chippa clashed in the 2019 Nedbank Cup semi-finals, with the AmaKhosi winning 4-2 in a thrilling clash in the Eastern Cape. Overall, the teams have clashed on 25 previous occasions, with Chiefs recording 14 wins to eight for Chippa. There have been three draws. Chiefs lead the scoring 28-18.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS VS MPHENI HOME DEFENDERS

Sunday, February 16 (15h00 kick-off) – Loftus Versfeld Stadium

* Mamelodi Sundowns are meeting third-tier opposition for the second round in a row having defeated Free State ABC Motsepe League side Sibanye Golden Stars 5-2 in the Last 32. Their Nedbank Cup record against teams from the SAFA structures reads played eight, won eight, 49 goals scored, four goals conceded.

* Mamelodi Sundowns have now advanced from the Last 32 in 16 of the 18 seasons of the Nedbank Cup, the best record of any club. Their only early exits came in 2011 versus Orlando Pirates (0-1) and 2019 against Chippa United (1-2).

* Mpheni Home Defenders defeated second-tier Hungry Lions 3-1 in the Last 32 and are the only third-tier side into the Last 16. They kept up the record of at least one team from the SAFA ranks reaching the Last 16 in every season of the Nedbank Cup, bar 2021 when no teams were entered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
