Chiefs book first Nedbank Cup quarterfinal since 2019

PIC: Kaizer Chiefs beat Casric Stars 2-1

Kaizer Chiefs booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Casric Stars on Sunday, while there was also an astonishing 6-3 victory for Stellenbosch FC at TS Galaxy.
The line-up for the Last 8 is now complete with Chiefs and Stellenbosch to join Mamelodi Sundowns, giant-killers Dondol Stars, Sekhukhune United, Chippa United, Royal AM and Orlando Pirates in the hat.
Sunday’s matches closed out an excellent round of fixtures in which 29 goals were scored, a record for the Last 16 since the Nedbank Cup was first played in 2008.

And 12 of those goals came in the final two games as Chiefs booked their first quarterfinal place since 2019 – the year in which they lost to then second-tier Galaxy in the final.
Burundian striker Caleb Bimenyimana put them ahead from the penalty-spot but Stars drew level when the prolific Kgomotso Mosadi netted just past the hour-mark.
However, the second-tier side’s joy was short-lived as Chiefs were back in front a minute later when Ashley du Preez netted for the second round in a row.
Chiefs have lost to lower division sides on six occasions in the Nedbank Cup, more than any other team, but on this occasion were able to hold off their opponents for the win.
The other game on Sunday was an extraordinary encounter at the Mbombela Stadium as Stellenbosch defeated Galaxy in a nine-goal thriller.

Galaxy had only conceded 12 goals in 23 games in league and cup this season but shipped half that number in this match alone.
Stellenbosch, who reach the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals for the first time, had an early lead through Devon Titus but galaxy drew level via their new Venezuelan striker Yaimil Medina as he scored from the penalty-spot.
It looked as though it would be 1-1 at the break, but deep into injury-time at the end of the first half, Iqraam Rayners gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage.
They then ran away with it in the second half as Andre de Jong scored his first for the club and Junior Mendieta added a fourth, before Rayners took his tally to four goals in this season’s Nedbank Cup with a second in the game.
Masilake Phohlongo (penalty) and Kamogelo Sebelebele (his first goal in professional football), scored either side of that strike for Galaxy, but Stellenbosch had the final say as Ibraheem Jabaar also scored his first goal in South African football.
