Can Zwane create Soweto Derby history in the Nedbank Cup?

PIC: Arthur Zwane

Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane has already made a small piece of Premier Soccer League (PSL) history, but will be hoping for more when his side tackle old foes Orlando Pirates in their Nedbank Cup semifinal at the FNB Stadium on May 6 (kick-off 15h00).
Zwane is the first South African coach to lead Chiefs to two Soweto Derby victories in the PSL era, and is now seeking for a third win that make him the most successful local tactician in the fixture in the last three decades.
Chiefs won both league games this season with narrow 1-0 successes, immediately catapulting Zwane – in his maiden campaign as head coach – to the head of a short list.
There have been 22 wins for Chiefs and 20 for Pirates since the formation of the PSL ahead of the 1996/97 season, but only eight of those 42 victories have been engineered by South African coaches.
The most successful before this season had been Eric Tinkler, who led Pirates to two wins in the 2015/16 season.
The co-coaching team of Doctor Khumalo & Donald Khuse led Chiefs to a Derby win in 2002/03, while the only other South African to steer the AmaKhosi to success against their great rivals before Zwane was Gavin Hunt in 2020/21.
Admittedly, Chiefs have largely hired foreign coaches all through that period, though Steve Komphela had close to three years in charge at Naturena, but never tasted a Soweto Derby win.

The coach with the most Derby successes in the PSL is former Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter, who won five in his two spells in charge of the club. There were three in the Briton’s first stint and two in his second, which both came last season before he was fired.
German Ernst Middendorp is next on the list with four, which also came from his two spells at Naturena. He picked up a pair of wins in the 2005/06 season and another two in 2019/20.

Muhsin Ertugral and Vladimir Vermezovic are the only other Chiefs coaches to record three wins.
That is also the most wins a Pirates coach has enjoyed in the Derby as Ruud Krol and Micho Sredojevic claimed three victories in their spells with the clubs. Zinnbauer might have joined them had he not been absent for the matches Davids was in charge.
There have been a few coaches to lead both sides in Derbies since 1996/97, but the only one to claim a win for either team was Ted Dumitru.
He was successful with Pirates in the 1999/00 season and then led Chiefs to victory in 2003/04.
