Nedbank Cup Young Stars08/02/2015
The Nedbank Cup is a great platform for young stars to grow their reputation. Here are five young stars to watch in this year’s competition.
Club: Jomo Cosmos
Date of birth: 12/12/1992
Zimbabwean forward Mashumba has been a revelation at Jomo Cosmos since joining the club midway through last season. The 22-year-old is among the leading scorers in the National First Division this season and is a major reason by Ezenkosi have been riding high in the league table. His pace and quick feet make him a trick customer for defences, while he also has great finishing ability and rarely missed a golden chance. It seems inevitable that he will be snapped up by a Premier Soccer League club sooner rather than later.
Club: Maritzburg United
Date of birth: 25/9/1993
The 21-year-old defender Mngonyama is enjoying his second full season in the Premier Soccer League having been sent on loan by Mamelodi Sundowns to Maritzburg United. Mngonyama had helped BidVest Wits to the Nedbank Cup finals last year and has continued to develop into a fine centre-back, as evidenced by his constant call-ups to the national team squad by Shakes Mashaba. Maritzburg don’t concede many goals under coach Steve Komphela, a former centre-back himself, and the young defender has played a big part in that.
Club: University of Pretoria
Date of birth: 17/8/1992
Striker Mnyamane has risen from obscurity to be a leading scorer with University of Pretoria this season, recently committing himself to a new contract with the Tshwane club. His trickery and skill, coupled with an eye for goal, have seen a number of clubs sit up and take notice of his obvious talent. He was spotted playing for the North West University in the Varsity Cup football competition and after switching to AmaTuks last year, has taken to life in the Premier Soccer League.
Club: Ajax Cape Town
Date of birth: 18/2/1994
Mobara started life as a midfielder at Ajax Cape Town, but has blossomed after being asked to play a central defensive role by coach Roger de Sa. Alongside Rivaldo Coetzee, Mobara has formed one of the best central defensive partnerships in the PSL, despite the duo having a combined age of just 38! He recently signed a new deal with Ajax, but his future will likely be in Europe with giants Ajax Amsterdam monitoring his progress closely. Sure in the tackle with excellent game awareness, his ‘all-action’ style makes him a real crowd-pleaser too.
Club: Black Leopards
Date of birth: 11/5/1993
Such has been the form this season of young Black Leopards midfielder Ntshangase that Gauteng giants Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly chasing his signature at the end of the campaign. The 21-year-old has not only been scoring great goals, but also providing assists for others in a Lidoda Duvha team that has otherwise struggled in the National First Division. Ntshangase helped Leopards into the Last 32 of the Nedbank Cup when he scored in the 3-1 victory over Witbank Spurs in the preliminary rounds. Keep an eye on this special talent.
