Nedbank Cup Last 16 records of this year's competing teams

The Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup gets under way on Friday with eight places in the quarterfinals up for grabs.
Ten of the 16 sides remaining are from the Premier League, with four from the National First Division and there are also a couple of ABC Motsepe League sides.
Seven teams will be making their debut at this stage of the competition.

AMAZULU

Usuthu's only defeat at this stage of the competition since 2008 came in a 4-1 loss to BidVest Wits in 2014. They claimed a penalty shoot-out victory over Moroka Swallows in 2010 after the teams had played to a 2-2 draw.


BAROKA FC

Baroka have reached this stage of the tournament three times before, twice as a lower league side, and famously defeated Moroka Swallows 2-1 in 2011 while in the third-tier. They also beat Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-0 in 2016, but lost 1-0 to Platinum Stars last year.

BLOEMFONTEIN CELTIC

Celtic claimed an excellent 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates at this stage of the competition in 2009, but then lost in the next round to second-tier side University of Pretoria. Their only Last 16 defeat came in 2015 against eventual finalists Ajax Cape Town.

CAPE TOWN CITY

Premier League City have reached the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup for the first time in their history having been formed in 2016. They defeated fellow top-flight side BidVest Wits 1-0 in the Last 32.

CHIPPA UNITED

After much disappointment in previous Nedbank Cup campaigns, Chippa reached the Last 16 for the first time in 2017 and went on to beat Polokwane City 2-0.

EC BEES

Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League side EC Bees have reached the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup for the first time in their history. They defeated fourth-tier side Mariveni United 3-1 in the Last 32.

FREE STATE STARS

Stars have picked up some notable scalps at this stage of the competition in the past, including SuperSport United (2011) and Orlando Pirates the following year, while they defeated Ikapa Sporting 8-1 in (2008). They also won a penalty shoot-out against Ajax Cape Town in 2010, but were thumped 4-1 in the Last 16 by Pirates in 2017.

KAIZER CHIEFS

Chiefs have been a mixed bag in the Last 16, with all three of their outright losses coming to lower league opposition University of Pretoria (2009), FC Cape Town (2010) and Black Leopards (2015). They also suffered a penalty shoot-out loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2008.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Sundowns have largely been successful in the Last 16, with their only blemishes a 1-0 extra-time loss to Platinum Stars in 2009 and defeat by the same scoreline to Lamontville Golden Arrows last year.

MARITZBURG UNITED

United's only previous defeat at this stage of the competition came in 2016 when they were beaten by the now defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces. They have otherwise enjoyed a run of success that included a penalty shoot-out victory over Platinum Stars in 2014.

ORLANDO PIRATES

Pirates have been largely successful at this stage, suffering defeats to Bloemfontein Celtic (2009), Free State Stars (2012) and SuperSport United (2015). In the previous four times they have gone past the Last 16, they have gone on to reach the final, lifting the trophy in 2011 and 2014.

RICHARDS BAY

Newly-formed National First Division side Richards Bay have reached the Last 16 for the first time in their history. They beat Free State ABC Motsepe League team Bloemfontein Young Tigers 5-0 in the Last 32.

ROYAL EAGLES

National First Division side Royal Eagles have reached the Last 16 for the first time in their history. They beat KwaZulu-Natal SAB Regional League team Happy Wanderers 1-0 in the Last 32.

STEENBERG UNITED

Western Cape ABC Motsepe League side Steenberg United have reached the Last 16 of the Nedbank Cup for the first time in their history. They defeated fellow third-tier side Orbit College 3-1 in the Last 32.

STELLENBOSCH FC

National First Division side Stellenbosch FC have reached the Last 16 for the first time in their history having been formed in 2016. They beat fellow second-tier side Highlands Park 1-0 in the Last 32.

UBUNTU CAPE TOWN

Newly-formed National First Division side Ubuntu Cape Town have reached the Last 16 for the first time in their history. They beat Polokwane City 3-2 in the Last 32.
