Maritzburg have strong cup record against Sundowns

Maritzburg United may be underdogs in their Nedbank Cup semifinal with Mamelodi Sundowns on April 22, but history shows they should have nothing to fear against The Brazilians.
The teams have been involved in four previous cup ties and their have been two victories each – with Maritzburg winning the last in the top eight competition earlier this season.
Both of Sundowns’ wins have come in the Nedbank Cup competition though, so Maritzburg can make a piece of history of sorts by not only reaching their first major cup competition, but also getting a first win over the Tshwane side in the country’s most prestigious knockout tournament.
A lone goal from DR Congo forward Patrick Apataki gave Sundowns a 1-0 win in the second round of the Nedbank Cup competition in 2007, before United gained revenge with a 2-0 success in the League Cup in 2010.
Namibian international Rudolf Bester and Fabian McCarthy scored the goals in that famous win for The Team of Choice.
Sundowns claimed a 2-0 success in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals in 2012 when Lebohang Mokoena and Nyasha Mushekwi scored on their way to the final, where they lost to SuperSport United.
That was the last time the sides met in knockout football until this season when Evans Rusike, who has since left for SuperSport United, scored for Maritzburg in a 1-0 win at Sundowns in the quarterfinals of the top eight.
The sides are vying for a place in the 2018 Nedbank Cup final that will be hosted in Cape Town on May 19.
