Chiefs face anxious wait over injured defenders

Kaizer Chiefs have a number of injury worries ahead of the Nedbank Cup semifinal against Free State Stars on April 21, not least in their defence where a potential crisis is looming.
Defenders Erick Mathoho, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Teenage Hadebe have all missed training this week and are in a race to be fit, though the latter is suspended for the league clash with Platinum Stars on Sunday.
Mphahlele was replaced after just 14 minutes of the 3-0 loss to Chippa United last time out, while Hadebe was taken off at halftime of that game.
All have proven important players for Chiefs this season and should the trio be missing for the cup clash, it would be a major blow for coach Steve Komphela, who would have to put together a make-shift defence.
Hadebe netted a late winner for the AmaKhosi when they beat Free State Stars 1-0 in a league clash on April 4.
There is also a concern over centre-back Daniel Cardoso, who is just one yellow card away from a suspension for the semifinal.
Whether he is risked for the Platinum Stars game – or pushed into service by injuries to others – remains to be seen but as one of the form defenders in the PSL this season, he is another important cog in the side.
Chiefs and Free State Stars are vying for a place in the Nedbank Cup final that will be played in Cape Town on May 19.
