Barker relishing giant-killing act in Nedbank Cup Last 1609/03/2018
Stellenbosch FC are relishing their underdog status as they prepare to meet Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.
Chiefs are comfortably the most successful side in the history of the competition with 13 previous victories, and defeated Stellenbosch 3-0 in the Last 32 in 2017.
It makes them heavy favourites for Saturday's clash, but Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker says his players are relishing the challenge.
"We are looking forward to facing Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. It is a great opportunity for us as a small club," Barker told reporters. "We will be testing ourselves against very a big club with a rich history. They are cup kings of South African football.
"Chiefs have an incredible Cup pedigree. We are expecting a difficult match. But we are keen to do well against them this weekend."
Barker led second-tier University of Pretoria to the Nedbank Cup final in 2009 where they lost to Moroka Swallows, and says there is no reason why he cannot repeat the feat.
"I've always been of the opinion that footballers, coaches, we want to win trophies and we want to win leagues. That's what we are in the game for," he said.
"Every single game we play I think we have to go out to win the game but you have to also be strategic in your thinking. We've just got to take it one game at a time."
